Agents
Follow the agents at work
Read the task panel and the report to understand what happened during a Copilot request.
Some Copilot requests involve agents and tools working through several steps. The task panel and the run report expose the progress received by the application. This guide shows how to read that evidence and distinguish an ongoing task from a finished result.
Open the task panel
Send a concrete request in Copilot, then open Tasks while it works. The panel lists the steps and agents that have actually been reported. A simple answer may not need several agents; the absence of a large team is not a problem.
Read the current phase and the status of each visible task. New information appears as it arrives. Do not treat an empty panel at the start as proof that the request has finished, or a moving progress indicator as proof of success.
Read the report with the answer
The run report in the conversation brings together the task status and the recorded steps. Expand the relevant entries to see the reported action, the agent involved and the timing when it is available.
Compare the report with the final answer. A completed action is one part of the task; the answer still needs to match your original request. Keep a useful follow-up in the same thread so the relevant context stays together.
Know what a stopped task means
Copilot exposes Stop controls for ongoing work. A stopped or failed task is distinct from a completed task. Read the reported state and any error instead of assuming that an interrupted request will retry by itself.
The agents shown inside a Copilot task and the Python client presented on the Agents product page are different entry points. This task panel is a view of your conversation's execution; it is not a scheduler for every Python script or workflow.

What to remember
- The task panel displays reported work, not a promised team for every request.
- Check both the run status and the content of the final answer.
- Stopped, failed and completed tasks have different meanings.
